Minor Boys
Shandonagh 0 12 Milmore Gaels 3 08
Our minor team suffered defeat in the last round of this year's league campaign against Milmore Gaels on Wednesday. The home side conceded three goals in the first ten minutes but managed to claw their way back into the game and only trailed by a point at half time. A physically stronger Milmore team took control of the game in the second half and built up a commanding six point lead. Despite this a young and committed Shandonagh team never gave up and were unlucky not to score at least one goal in the dying minutes. All players are encouraged to attend training.
Under 14's Féile Champions 2012
Shandonagh 5 12 The Downs 4 05
On Saturday evening last in Cusack Park the U14 lads created a piece of history by becoming the first Shandonagh underage side to win the prestigious Féile trophy. In an absorbing game, played in excellent conditions and in front of a big crowd, the whole team played their part in a memorable victory.
The game began at a hectic pace and Shandonagh got the better of the opening exchanges and got the first point after two minutes. A second point was added by a free before the Downs got their first point. Disaster struck when the Downs were awarded a penalty, which was calmly dispatched to the corner of the net. Despite this set back, Shandonagh asserted themselves and struck back with a fisted goal and three more points. With time running out in the first half the Downs again struck back with a goal from a high centre to level the game. However Shandonagh again replied with a goal from a long distance effort and led at half time by 2-7 to 2-4.
After the resumption Shandonagh looked the more confident side and began to exert more and more pressure on the Downs defence. The lads used the possession well and established a seven point lead. Another Downs's goal against the run of play reduced the lead before Shandonagh struck back with two goals of their own. They were now in complete control and added on some great points in a strong finish to win by 5-12 to 4-5.
At full time the entire squad celebrated with all the supporters who had travelled to Cusack Park. They were a huge source of encouragement throughout the game. The cup was accepted to great applause and the celebrations continued on the pitch afterwards for some time.
The Club is very proud of every panel member who all played their part on Saturday evening. The discipline shown was superb and we can all look forward to representing Westmeath at the national Féile finals in Laois in June. Thank you to all who supported the team by organising playing gear, food, transport, signs, flags and banners and also their presence to roar on the team. We would also like to thank all those who helped out in the clubhouse afterwards. A final word of thanks to Ned, Alan, John, Gerry and Pat for all of their efforts in training and preparing the team. We look forward to more of the same in the coming months!
