Crookedwood GAA Notes

Intermediate championship: Crookedwood 1-9 Fr.Daltons 0-17
The 1st round of this year's championship ended in defeat as a capable Daltons outfit put us to the sword. On what felt more like a winters evening than two days before Summer, swirling winds and intermittent drizzle didn't do much to dampen this keenly contested game. Playing with the breeze in the 1st half we didn't make much use of it and the deadly accurate Daltons free-taker punished every foul our defence committed (and we did commit alot) to give them a commanding 6 point lead at half time. With the wind at their backs for the second half Daltons looked set for a handy win. However, our lads gave as good as they got and but for some early attempts for goals when taking points would've been the better option we could've salvaged at least a draw from this game. Nonetheless the selectors have plenty to work with but every player needs to train and stand up and be counted if we are to achieve our goals, starting with the next round vs near neighbours Clonkill. Team: Shane McGovern, Ger McGovern, Enda Murray, Tommy Casserly, Ronan Scally, Damien Grifferty, Dara O Keefe, Kevin Orme, Ed Nally, Seamus Savage, Brian McLoughlin, Emmet Feerick, Johnny Orme, Noel Yourell, Barry O Mara.Subs used: Antoin Savage for Feerick, Simon McCarthy for Grifferty (injured), Shane Collins for Yourell, Aodan Boyhan for Casserly. (We all wish a speedy recovery to Damien Grifferty who received a nasty hand injury during the game. The next round of the championship takes place on Sunday 13th May @ 6:30 in Cusack Park. We face neighbours Clonkill in this one and after losing the 1st round a good result is vital here. Players are reminded that training continues every Tuesday and Thursday @ 7pm and all players have to attend.
Junior League
Our Junior team were well beaten in the latest round of Division 4 hurling by a strong Raharney team. Indeed the fact that we were able to field a team with many of our players facing into college exams was an achievement in itself and but for the return of a few lads after a spell of time out from hurling this game would not have gone ahead. No doubt, come the middle of Summer when we have a full panel there will be no games for these lads as has been the case for many years with the regular Summer ban on hurling. Team: Ciaran McCabe, Danny Newman, Enda Murray, David Newman, Aodan Boyhan, Ger McGovern, Cian Cooney, Seamus Savage, Simon McCarthy, Richie Crowley, Brian McLoughlin, Ger Boyhan, J.J. Brennan, Shane Collins, Conor McCarthy. Sub used: Stephen Moran for Conor McCarthy. Team management would like to thank all players for making themselves available especially those who hadn't hurled in a while and we hope to see them back in training on a regular basis. Fair play to Ger McGovern who travelled all the way from Sligo for us.
Underage.
Our U12 team enjoyed victory in their first outing on Wednesday last with an impressive win over Turin. This was our first game and our mentors had a full panel to choose from. Hopefully we will continue on a winning run.
Panel as follows; Aaron Whelan, Bernard Cox, Dean McCawley, Cian Fiach, Brendan McCarthy, Owen Maleady, Ciaran Bawle, Jack Moran, Niall McGovern, Colm Pantry, Lawrence Monaghan, Noel Bardon, Patrick Davitt, Feichín Brennan & Adam Bate. Training for U12/14 will be at the new time of 7.30pm Friday eve.
Fixtures can be viewed on www.crookedwood.gaa.ie , www.westmeathgaa.ie/juvenile and in the local papers. Again as fixtures are liable to change all players are asked to keep in touch with their mentors and attend training regularly.
