HEARTBREAK FOR MINOR HURLERS
LEINSTER MINOF HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Laois 4-12 Westmeath 2-16
Westmeath minor hurlers lost out to Laois in the first round of this year's competition last Saturday in Cusack Park. This was a very close match played in front of a fine crowd in warn April sunshine and went right down to the wire. Laois started the better of the two sides despite Westmeath opening the scoring and had the ball in the Westmeath net within the first two minutes through full forward Joe Campion. Niall O Brien closed the gap in the fifth minute but Laois replied with the games second goal minutes later and they looked to be cruising, with the Westmeath struggling badly in the full back line. Westmeath came more into the game and helped in no small manner by the performance of the Doyle twins Ciaran and Killian who notched up 1-03 between them as Westmeath closed the gap. Laois were wasteful with chances and hit five wides in a row but two unanswered points from PJ Scully sent them in four points up at the break 2-08 to 1-07.
Westmeath were first off the mark in the second half as Ciaran Doyle found the Laois net and further points from Luke Loughlin and Niall O' Brien gave Westmeath the lead, but Laois were never far behind and battled hard with points from Ciaran McEvoy and Scully keeping them in touch. Charlie Dwyer blasted home a Laois penalty in the fourty-eight minute and it was game on with only the minimum between the sides. Ciaran Doyle and Scully traded points but another Westmeath defensive error let Laois's Ben Conroy in for their fourth goal in the fifty-eight minute to give them a two point lead and that's how it finished as a bitterly disappointed Westmeath side lost on a final scoreline of 4-12 to 2-16
ALL IRELAND SCÓR SUCCESS
Congratulations to Peter Dolan (Moate all whites GAA Club) on winning the All Ireland Scór Recitation title, and also to Clara (Offaly) who lifted the Ballad Group title.
SLEVINS COACHES INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Next weekend sees the start of the intermediate championship for 2012 with the first clash between the second string teams of near neighbours Clonkill and Raharney, and in the current climate it is wonderful to see clubs in the county in a position to be able field teams that are strong enough to compete at this level. This is likely to be a battle that will go down to the wire, as both sides will be evenly matched, this time last year Clonkill were victors by just two points so Raharney will definitely be out to make amends. Cullion will face up to Ringtown who slipped down from the senior ranks last year and will have on eye on returning, Cullion on the other hand never reached their true potential last year, after a brilliant performance against Raharney where they earned a draw they failed miserably in their efforts to re-produce that form and will have it all to do to overcome Ringtown. Crookedwood will play Fr. Daltons and this is one to look out for, Fr. Daltons having lost the last two finals in a row will want to prove themselves, and in fairness to Crookedwood they reached the semi-final last year losing out by a single point to eventual winners St. Brigids, expect a fiery one. Brownstown take on Turin and will be hoping for a winning start after failing to even make the knock out stages last year with some very average performances, however Turin will also be out to make amends for last year as they to failed to reproduce the form that got them to the 2010 final and will be no pushover. This is only the start of the campaign but clubs will want to set down a marker!!!.
