Westmeath GAA has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of former county footballer and physical trainer Padraig 'Poggy' Lynn.

In his mid-thirties, Padraig was a much-liked and well-known individual who excelled in both football and rugby. Part of a family which is synonymous with Shandonagh GAA, he lined out for the Kilpatrick-based club alongside his older brothers Mick and Tom for many years. He also played rugby for both Mullingar and Clontarf, and was a member of the Westmeath football panel in the late 1990s, having been given his debut by Barney Rock against Louth in a National League game in October 1995.

In more recent years, Padraig established himself as a highly-respected strength and conditioning coach. He trained the Westmeath footballers during the reigns of Paidi O Se and Tomas O Flatharta, and also performed a similar role with the county hurlers in the past couple of years. In addition, he trained the Longford footballers during Luke Dempsey's spell with the O'Farrell County.

Padraig is survived by his wife Olive, parents Sean and Queenie, sisters Mary, Deirdre and Siobhan, brothers Michael and Tom, and his extended family and friends. His remains will be removed to the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar at 6.30 this evening, with his funeral taking place after 10am Mass tomorrow in Walshestown Cemetery.
