Westmeath G A A Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O.
Important week for Westmeath Hurling
LEINSTER MINOR HURLING
Westmeath minor hurlers travel to Tullamore next Saturday evening to take on Offaly in the championship qtr final, and this like the last game against Kilkenny has the makings of a cracker, with Offaly coming out on top in the same fixture this time last year Westmeath will be hoping to make amends. Their slow start the last day against Kilkenny will definitely be a concern but this side has character and leaders. A bigger performance will be required from all of the players if Westmeath are to progress and they cannot afford to be wasteful with their chances. Offaly who had a convincing 3-15 to 1-10 win over Carlow in their last outing will be hoping to progress also and with players in the side like Jason Samson and Thomas Geraghty this will be no easy task for Westmeath, throw-in is at 7pm so don't be late.
SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Westmeath senior hurlers will have travel to Carlow next weekend for the first round of this years Leinster championship, the home venue for Carlow will be a slight advantage who it's fair to say have made significant progress in the hurling arena over the last few years. Westmeath who had a dreadful Div 2 league campaign not winning a game and parted from their Manager Kevin Martin will have it all to do to record a victory in this one, that being said the response to new interim manager Brian Hanley has been positive and training has been going well. Carlow who got the better of Westmeath in the earlier league encounter have a number of injury worries as Andrew Gaul, Eddie Byrne and Killian McCabe all picked up injuries in their club championship matches, while Westmeath welcome back dual player Paul Geville to the side and will be looking to him for a big performance along with Andrew Mitchell, Brendan Murtagh and Derek Mc Nicholas if they are to progress with a fixture against Galway awaiting the winners.
