Westmeath G A A Notes By Pat Reilly Westmeath P R O.
ALLIANZ LEAGUE FOOTBALL:
At Last!!!! Westmeath senior footballers have broken their run of bad fortune in the National League when they overcame Tipperary in Semple Stadium last Sunday. While this was by no means a brilliant performance it was very important to take the win which was done the hard way. Tipperary played the better football at times and when they were awarded a penalty in the first half which was duly dispatched to the Westmeath net and things didn't look great even though the sides were level at the break. Westmeath fought back from a five point deficit late on through the second half to claim victory thanks to goals from Paul Greville and a penalty from David Glennon and finished up with a four point win on a final score line of 2-12 to 2-09 thanks in no small measure to the goalkeeping of Gary Connaughton who brought off some fine saves particularly at the start of the second half.
ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE
Westmeath hurlers play Clare in the next round of the National League in Cusack Park next Weekend. Westmeath will be disappointed having lost to Limerick and will need to lift themselves as this is a match, we need to win this match and nothing less that a performance like the last one against Limerick will be good enough. Clare having defeated Antrim in their last outing will be formidable opponents and will be hoping to continue on their winning ways, however if Westmeath hurl like they are able to then I don't see why they cant come away with a win. Verdict Westmeath
LEINSTER U-21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP:
Westmeath U21 footballers took on Laois in the first round of this year's championship last Wednesday night in Portlaoise. This was a good performance from a Westmeath side that fielded without the services of John Heslin at midfield, but the rest of the team stepped up to the mark on the night. Laois started brightly, James Doyle winning a free, which was converted by wing-forward Luke Doyle. Laois failed to build on that, however, and Westmeath punished them with three points on the trot, all from placed balls, with Conor Lynam (two) and Ian Coffey on target.
Westmeath looked a slicker, more accomplished outfit in the first half and had built up a three-point lead before winning a penalty; Coffey tucking away the spot-kick to give Laois a mountain to climb.
Westmeath led at the break 1-6 to 0-3, and were too strong to let Laois back into the game, with a late goal from Barry Kelly a mere consolation for the hosts.

PLAYERS REGISTRATION
As you are aware, all clubs are asked to complete the registration of their players and members by March 31st. To date, 130,000 people have been registered, which is about 40,000 higher than this time last year.
As outlined in the recent club newsletter, we are asking clubs to continue with the registration of players and members for the 2011 season on the online system. If club members are concerned about their information, then a reduced amount of information is acceptable. Please note that mobile phone numbers and email addresses are not obligatory.
Please note that a new version of the system has been launched on Monday. While all major upgrade work has been suspended, essential upgrades have taken place, based on requirements for the national fixtures system, which shares the same platform.
The processes for registering members remains the same i.e. ticking boxes for the players, selecting full/youth membership and submitting and so on. The process for adding new members also remains the same i.e. opening a window to add members and filling in the required details. Generating reports and so on is also the same. The main changes are in the look of the screens and in the organisation of the menu's. Please note that there are no changes to the registration of teams for the player injury fund.
There will be phone support available 7 days a week for clubs (see details below) and a manual with screen shots will also be provided. Short tutorial videos will also be available.
We will be arranging a training evening and details will be all clubs shortly.
