Martin to take over Westmeath hurlers

New Westmeath hurling manager Kevin Martin celebrates after scoring Tullamore's opening goal in the Offaly SHC final
Former Offaly All-Ireland winner Kevin Martin is to be the new Westmeath senior hurling manager in succession to Eamon Gallagher.
Martin cut his teeth in management with his native Tullamore, who he guided to the Offaly SHC title earlier this month, their first success since 1964.
Martin was player-manager with the county town side, lining out at full forward in the final win over Kilcormac-Killoughey and semi-final win over Birr.
At county level he was a renowned half back, and had a distinguished intercounty career with the Faithful County, helping them to Liam MacCarthy Cup successes in 1994 and '98.
An All star winner in '94, Martin continues the tradition of a long line of Offaly men who have guided the fortunes of the Lake County hurlers. Most recently Johnny Dooley held the Westmeath manager's position, while Joachim Kelly and Pat Delaney also filled the role.
