MATCH

Castledaly started this match with Senior Football status at stake and especially in the minds of the loyal travelling supporters.  With one win to our credit the lads started the game full of determination and their experience from previous years to ensure survival.

In midfield Liam Fitzpatrick and Fergal Hynes set the example, both stepping up to kick start Castledaly scoring in first minutes. The ever green Paul Kelly showed his experience to calmly pick a point under pressure before Killucan got on the scoreboard. Castledaly continued to push and a goal mouth scramble saw a fine Kevin Stones shot saved but Aaron Nugent was in close support and in a flash kicked the rebound past Killucans goalkeeper for a major.

Alan Stone marked his return from injury with a strong performance, and some top class scores from play, his first on 13 minutes between two Killucan points.  Killucan defence were closing ranks and Lorcan Dolan in particular found himself shackled under close attention. Under these circumstances clear score chances dried up and after the ball filtered through all eight forward players without a glimpse of a score, Liam Fitzpatrick brave effort from long distance carried narrowly wide. Alan Stone was also pushed wide to a long range effort but his powerful kick had distance and direction with his shot raising the white flag, and the local supporters to their feet  in appreciation.

Among some excellent Castledaly defending Paul  Kelly overturned possession and worked the ball forward exchanging passes to create his second score of the day. Lorcan Aaron and Paul saw shorts off target as both teams spurned missed chances. Killucan then added another three points from play on 25th  26th and 31st minute to reach half time trailing score: Castledaly  1-6(9)  Killucan  0-6(6).

In second half  Killucan started strongest winning three free kicks plus adding one point from play without reply, sweeping away a Castledaly hard earned half time lead.

As Castledaly looked to strike back they found the Killucan defence far from generous. Paul Kelly saw his shot saved but the resulting 45 free was off target as pressure began to grow in this tightly wound game.  Kevin Stone was creating chances but also found the close defensive attention enough to see his shot trail narrowly wide.  At the defensive end Shane Dolan Shane Fitzpatrick Adam Turley Liam Fitzpatrick Alan Stone intervened and turned defence into attack time and again while sub Niall Duffy added freshness. On 50 minutes Paul Kelly added a quality right foot point straight down the centre in reply to a Killucan free kick scored.  As Castledaly chased a win Lorcan Dolan saw two efforts fall short while the opposition were guilty of similar at the opposite end of pitch.

Subs Cathal Dolan and Paul Costello reenergised the Castledaly attack in reply to a Killucan brace from free and play. Kevin Stone saw a goal bound shot scrambled wide but the resulting 45 free was converted by Jordan Nugent. As the final minutes ticked by midfielder Fergal Hynes stormed forward from centre and crashed his shot over the crossbar to reduce the deficit to two points.  Kevin Stone was fouled near goal and  his free kick brought the scores to the minimum with 4 minutes extra played.  The final free kick from distance fell to Jordan  Nugent but despite his miracle skills in the past today was not to be our day and Killucan won by smallest margin.  Full time score: Castledaly  1-10(13)  Killucan  0-14(14).

With other results falling in our favour Castledaly continue senior status for another year.
