Southern Gaels club notes

May 20, 2019

Southern Gaels  4-17             Cullion   5-14

Cullion snatched a dramatic draw with a goal from the last puck as they reversed an 11 point half time deficit.

Gaels had the best of the first half with goals from MJ Kelly and Fionn Dowd giving them the edge. Kelly, Diarmuid Martin and Sean Dowd all added well worked points to see the home side build up a good lead. Cullion managed eight points mainly from placed balls as they struggled to keep pace with a determined Gaels side. Patrick Flynn brought off a number of good saves in the Athlone sides goal and Seamus Hoctor, Brian Dolan and Killian Coyle were resolute in defense.

Gaels got the ideal start to the second half as Fionn Dowd netted for a second time to give his side a 14 point lead. But from then on it all went badly wrong for Gaels. They conceded four goals over the next fifteen minutes to give Cullion a lifeline. Fionn and Sean Dowd, Diarmuid Martin and Jamie Anders pointed but they were not closing out the game despite their controlling proceedings. Dermot Carey also added a goal mid wat through the half but Cullion refused to accept defeat. Two points from play in the last two minutes left them a goal adrift as the game entered injury time. Gaels conceded a  lose in free and the initial effort was saved but with alert forwards following in Cullion managed to steer the sliother to the net for a dramatic share of the spoils.

Votes of Sympathy

Danny Lonican one of Southern Geals great stalwarts passed away this weekend. Danny played for many years for the Gaels and before that for Athlone Hurling club. Winner of many Championship and League titles in his hurling days Danny was a committed and dedicated clubman universally admired and respected. Having spent his working  life serving with the army he lived in his native Ferbane for the last number of years. Danny will be sadly missed by his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Condolences are also sent to the Corless family Retreat Park on the death of Michael Corless. The Corless family have had a long association with Southern Gaels since its foundation. Michael will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The death of Michael Scanlon Garrycastle sees the passing of one of Athlone's great six in a row side. A renowned footballer Michael was a great inspiration to all who knew him. Sympathies to his family, relatives and friends on their loss.
