St Loman’s end our U20 hopes

A very impressive St Loman’s team ended our U20FC interests with an emphatic 6-17 to 2-5 quarter-final victory under lights at Lakepoint Park on Saturday evening.

Following a superb first win round over Killucan eight days ago, we came into this game with a spring in our step, but the gulf in class soon became apparent when a St Loman’s side boasting half a dozen players with senior championship experience put us to the sword with a power-packed display.

On a perfect evening for football, we briefly led thanks to an early Jamie Stone free, but that was as good as it got as the hosts took complete control by scoring 4-11 without reply before half-time to end the game as a contest. We simply had no answer to St Loman’s superior team-work, quality and firepower as goals from Flanagan Cup winner Fola Ayorinde, TJ Cox (two) and Conan O’Hara propelled them into an unassailable lead.

To our great credit, we didn’t throw in the towel and only ‘lost’ the second half by two points, 2-6 to 2-4. Full forward Jamie Stone was outstanding once again, accounting for all of our tally and scoring two goals from close-in frees, including a stunning effort with the last kick of the game.

Despite being outclassed, we never gave up and our players will have learned a lot from being exposed to this level of football. It’s great to be fielding in this age group and well done to the management of James ‘Bomber’ Claffey, Brendan Nannery and Ciaran Daly for their work with the team.

Roll on 2019 when many of these players will be getting their first taste of intermediate championship football.

Team: Thomas Finnegan; Martin Ward, Darragh Coffey, Aidan Stone; Ryan Coughlan, Rory O’Neill, Dylan Maloney; Niall Carey, Keith Corcoran (captain); Aaron McNamee, Cathal Maher, Cathal Finn; James Hanlon, Jamie Stone, Diarmuid Egan. Subs: Danny Scully, Jack Mitchell, Mark Wrafter, Michael Murphy and Conor Carroll.

Scor na nOg

Best of luck to our acts in the Westmeath Scor na nOg semi-finals taking place in Milltown and Delvin next weekend. Hopefully all the hard work and practice they’ve put in over the past number of weeks will pay off! The Scor na nOg quiz is scheduled for early in the New Year.
