ACFL Division 3

Ballinagore 2-05 St. Malachy's 1-09

We played our neighbours on Sunday morning in Ballinagore in front of a good attendance for this local derby. Down a few players, we still fielded a decent side and we produced a fine first half performance with two well taken Michael Ennis goals putting us into a commanding half time lead of 2-04 to 0-02. Unfortunately for us, our second half performance was well below par and coupled to us loosing defenders James Sheerin and Kieran Deegan to injury, St. Malachy's gradually pointed their way back into contention. We had a wonderful opportunity to restore our lead when Cormac Deegan put Enda Kenny in with a lovely overhead kick, who in turn passed into Paddy Ennis who was through one on one but unfortunately Paddy lost control of the greasy ball and our chance was lost. With three points between the sides, we poorly coughed up possession from a free and let our opponents in for a levelling goal. Their tails now up, St. Malachy's kicked the next point to take the lead for the first time with time almost up. We did have chances to level the game but one dropped short and two others tailed wide. This was a frustrating result for us as we failed to hold our lead and see out the game. While our opponents had the momentum for the last quarter, they also appeared to finish stronger fitness-wise so we will have to work on that between now and the start of the championship. Keep up the hard work on the training pitch lads, the season will turn for us yet. Team: Marty Linnane, Robert Gannon, Enda Claffey, Robbie Keegan, Kieran Deegan, James Sheerin, Ciaran Carey, Frankie Deegan, Brendan Heeney, Enda Kenny, Cormac Deegan, Paddy Ennis, Darren Rigney, Brandon Carey, Michael Ennis. Subs: David Keegan, Eoin Deegan, David Slevin, Finian Heeney, Ian Seery, Declan Claffey, Tommy Kelly.

Minor Football League Division 2

Lilliput Gaels 3-09 Tubberclair 3-13

Our minor footballers hosted Tubberclair on Wednesday evening in sunny Ballinagore where both teams played out a very entertaining game of open and fast football. The game was close throughout with only a point seperating the sides at half time, Tubberclair in front by 2-05 to 2-04. The play continued to swing from end to end during the second half but in the end, the visitors emerged with the league points. There was a fine team performance with Matthew Looram, Darragh Seery, Fergal O'Brien, Finian Heeney and Morgan Gavigan in particular playing very well. Team: Jamie Keenan, Conal Fagan, Matthew Looram, Barry Bolger, Fergal O'Brien, Darragh Seery, Dylan Clarke, Aaron Glennon, Finian Heeney, Conor Murphy, Morgan Gavigan, Jack Gallagher, Jamie Fallon, Paddy Doran, Peter Reynolds.

Cathaoirleach Awards

We were delighted to have one of our own nominated for the Cathaoirleach Person of the Year award at last Friday evenings prestigious event in Belvedere. Shane Heraty has been an inspirational member of our club all his life and he has given so much to his community, whether it be GAA related activities on and off the field, Scór, Rounders, Macra, Comhaltas, you name it, he's been there and organised that, punching in 100's of hours of voluntary work each year along the way. While Shane didn't win on the evening, he received his certificate from John Shaw, chairman of Westmeath Co. Co. and hopefully he will get back some appreciation for all his efforts. Well done Shane, keep doing what you do best!
