Athlone chairman Padraig O'Rourke is pleased that they have appointed former Offaly manager Emmet McDonnell to lead them in 2018.

The south Westmeath side have signalled their intentions for the coming year with the appointment of such a high profile manager.

And O'Rourke told the Westmeath Independent that McDonnell's experienced will be vital in the development of their young squad.

"We are delighted with the appointment," said O'Rourke. "Emmet brings a lot of experience with him. He's a former county manager with Offaly and he was also involved with a number of successful teams over the last number of years.

"We feel it's the perfect fit. Emmet is used to getting the best out of younger players and a lot of our footballers fall into that age category. We won the minor division one title this year and we have a number of younger lads that will buy into Emmet's way of thinking."
