Waterford GAA is mourning the death of former hurling star John Barron, who was a member of the last team to bring the Liam McCarthy Cup to the county in 1959. Aged 74, the De La Salle clubman had been in failing health for some time and passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in the city on Monday evening. John was one of the most versatile players of his day, being equally at home in defence as attack. He played a starring role at left corner back in Waterford's 1959 All-Ireland success. While that victory was the highlight of his career, he also won three Munster championships, National League and Oireachtas medals, and represented his province in the Railway Cup on many an occasion. Paying tribute the Barron, Waterford chairman Pat Flynn said: "When you talk of Waterford hurling legends, you talk about John Barron in the same breath." Barron was the third member of the Waterford's 1959 All-Ireland winning team to die in the past 12 months. Tom Cheasty died last autumn, while Ned Power passed away earlier this year. Tweet
