Quarry, Mary (Maimie)

The Late Mary (Maimie) Quarry Another stalwart GAA woman has gone to her eternal reward in the person of Mary (Maimie) Quarry, Kilrush, Dungarvan who was in her 98th year. Maimie was sister of the late and legendary Declan Goode a member of the Waterford 1938senior hurling team which reached the All-Ireland final and of course who went on to become secretary of the County Board for an innings that spanned all of thirty three years. Another brother, Jackie, was a hero of the All-Ireland winning senior hurling team of 1948, and yet another brother, Jimmy, was also a very gifted player with the caman. Sadly she buried all of her three sons, Johnny and Denny in New York and Richie in his native Dungarvan, and her daughter Mairead. Johnny was the most famous of the three boys in a hurling context and starred in goal, for both Dungarvan and Waterford before emigrating to New York where he starred for that city for a number of years. There was a huge GAA presence at her funeral and burial in St. Mary's cemetery in her home town. Fittingly too the coffin was draped in the blue and white of club and county. Sincere sympathy is extended to her daughters Lenore, Mary and Patricia, and to many other members of the extended Quarry family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.
