Bannon, Jim

The late Jim Bannon

Although the Metropolis had been his dome for much more than forty years, Modeligo native Jim Bannon remained the truest of true Waterford men.

A past pupil of St Augustine's College, Dungarvan, Jim was a hurler of no mean ability in his own day donning the black and amber of Colligan Rockies with very considerable distinction.

He remained an avid GAA man in Dublin and for many years past was a senior steward in Croke Park in match days, big and small. He had a specific responsibility for the dressing room area under the Cusack Stand and its many the Sunday I met with him there while on journalistic duty. A more helpful or courteous friend I could never have asked for.

His passing at the early age of sixty eight is a great loss to his wife and family, and a very great loss also tot he GAA to which he devoted so much of his spare time. He was spoken about on television by Ger Canning in a tribute the man richly deserved.

Jim, who was laid to rest in Dublin, will be greatly missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing and befriending him. Go ndeine Dia trocaire ar a anam dilis.
