Cliffe, Larry

May 18, 2007
The late Larry Cliffe Shock waves reverted throughout the entire West Division at the news of the unexpected and untimely death of Larry Cliffe, a staunch and ultra loyal member of the St Mary's/Sliabh gCua sisters clubs. Larry was only in is 57th year, and was enjoying a social night our at his "local" when he collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene despite valiant attempts to save him by some medical people in attendance. On and off the field Larry Cliffe fell into the "character", and indeed the controversial" categories. But when it came to pulling on that club jersey his commitment was never less than total, and a match day never dawned when Larry didn't give his all in the name and in the cause of a club that was an integral part of his life. When his playing days were over he remained as loyal as he had ever been to St Mary's and Sliabh gCua. He got into many a verbal scrape in his defence, and otherwise, of them but always his support remained unwavering. The club gave him a fitting send off, one I'm certain Larry would have approved of to the full. He will be missed, even by those with whom he had argument at times, because the fact of the matter is that deep down Larry Cliffe was a good man, a sincere friend, and a tried and trusted GAA man. To his brothers John, Jim and Mossie his sisters Mary and Libby, and all of the other members of the Cliffe family the sympathy of the column and the columnist is sincerely extended.
