The late Paddy Fitzgerald The death of Paddy Fitzgerald, late of Gerogestown and Kilrossanty, sees yet another member of the great Kill football team of the 50s to go to their eternal reward. Paddy Fitzgerald was one of the outstanding footballers of his generation, and played for Newtown, Kill, Kilrossanty and Waterford, as well as representing Munster at Railway Cup level. Paddy grew up at a time when Kill weren't affiliated and played for the Newtown club, with whom he won a junior football championship medal . He also won a minor hurling county medal with Dunhill/O'Briens and played championship hurling with Dunhill club. In the early 50s he played senior football with Kilrossanty and won two county titles with the men from the Comeragh. He transferred to Kill about the mid 50s and together with the McGraths, Walshs, Powers, Caseys, Corcorans, Phelans, Mooneys, Guirys, Berminghams, Kirwans, Hanleys, Kennedys, etc., was part of a team of talented footballers up to 1960, that went close to winning the elusive senior football title. When Paddy married he returned to live in Kilrossanty and played with that club at centre-back. Paddy captained Kill to the 1958 county senior football final, played at Fraher Field, on a day when Kill went so close, leading by two points with time almost "up". Sadly, two late frees gave De La Salle a draw and they went on to win the replay. One of Paddy's greatest sporting disappointments was not winning a senior football title with the men in green and white. The Kill GAA wish to express their deepest sympathy to the Fitzgerald family of Kilrossanty on the death of their father Paddy. Courtesy of the Waterford News & Star 17 March 2006
