April 28, 2005
The Late Nicholas Flanagan It is with sadness and deep regret that we put on record the passing of Nicholas (Nicky) Flanagan, 84 Cork Road, Waterford. Following an illness borne out with great dignity, courage and strength, Nicky passed away to his eternal reward at St. Patrick's Hospital on Saturday March 26. Held in the highest esteem by everybody that knew him as clearly shown by the high number of mourners that attended his removal and funeral masses, his remains were removed from St. Patrick's Hospital to St. John's Church, Parnell Street, following rosary, which was beautifully recited by Sr. Emmanuelle. They were received by family friend, Fr. Liam Power on Monday, March 28, and the funeral mass took place on Tuesday March 29, with burial afterwards in St. Otteran's Cemetery, where Fr. Power again officiated. Readings at the funeral mass were by his grandchildren, Brian and Sarah. The prayers of the faithful were read by his grandchildren, Jordan, Reece, Darren and Craig. The offertory gifts were brought to the altar by his grandchildren, Karen, Paul, Briona and Emma. Sacred music was at the mass by his brother, Gerald and his grandson, Adrian, accompanied by organist, Francis Keegan. Near and end of the funeral mass, his eldest son, Nicky on behalf of the family, spoke highly of his father and mother as well as his brothers and only sister. He also thanked all those who sympathised with the family and to the staff of St. Patrick's Hospital and Sr. Emmanuelle for the time they gave to their father during his stay at the hospital. At the end of the funeral mass, his grandson, Adrian sang "Bring Him Home" as the coffin was carried shoulder high from the church. His remains were then laid to rest under a blanket of flowers at St. Otteran's Cemetery. Born in October 1930, Nicky was the son of the late Nicholas and Kathleen Flanagan, Newport's square, Waterford. He had a particular love for GAA and played with local club, Erins Own. He was also a founder member of the Roanmore GAA club and also was a founder member of the Wrens, which is now the St.Saviours GAA Club. He married his childhood sweetheart, Bridget (nee O'Grady) on April 9, 1950 and together, they brought up a family of six sons and one daughter. Nicky worked in Waterford Crystal and also worked in the Jute Factory in Tycor for many many years. He loved his family very much and he took particular pride in their achievements. He treasured his only daughter, Maria and loved her dearly, a love that will last forever. He lost the love of his life on Friday October 6, 1995 when his wife Biddy passed away. However, he continued to live life to full until he was struck down with illness. His second home became St. Patrick's Hospital and for the last number of years, the staff of the hospital gave of their time to him and his family. He was a man that touched the lives of many for his unselfish attitude. He loved his pint in Shefflins with his friends and loved to attend any family gathering. Nicky was a great family man and will be missed sadly missed by all who knew best as a kind, loving, caring and unselfish person. Pre-deceased by his wife, Biddy, his parents Nicholas and Kathleen, his brother, Johnny and his sister, Alice he is survived by his daughter, Maria, his sons, Nicky, Jim, Tony, Max, John and Ber, his grandchildren, Brian, Caroline, Declan, Nicole, Sarah, Adrian, Debbie, Craig, Darren, Reece, Jordan, Karen, Paul, Briona, Emma and Dylan, his greatgrandchildren Emma and Chloe, his brothers, Gerald and Paul, his sisters, May, Josie and Bridget, his son-in-law, Pat his daughters-in-law, his sister-in-law Maura, his brother in law, Tom, nephews, nieces and many friends, to whom we offer our deepest and sincerest sympathy.
