Recently retired Waterford star Stephen Molumphy believes Derek McGrath is the man to lead the Deise to the promised land.

It's 1959 since the county last celebrated All-Ireland success and, speaking on the eve of their league final date with Clare, 2007 All-Star Molumphy expressed his confidence in McGrath's managerial ability.

He also says there's a strength in depth to their squad now which could see them bridge that 57 year gap in the not too distant future.

"Derek, he's an excellent manager," Molumphy, who retired from the inter-county scene in 2014, remarked to Sun Sport.

"I only got one year with him and unfortunately it was coming to the stage where it was clashing with work and stuff.

"Derek came in at the right time and there's a new crop there. You can see it in this bunch.

"They are hungry, they want to take it on and they have the potential. I think they'll do it this year but you just like to keep that quiet!

"They are hungry and they are mad for it, which is absolutely fantastic.

"They'll do exactly what Derek says, which is the most important thing. He can take off five lads and throw on another five of the exact same calibre.

"Things are great in Waterford at the moment and it's not just a one or two-year thing, there's a crop there.

"It's a production like Kilkenny had a few years back in Waterford at the moment. Hopefully it can keep coming."
