Walsh, Francie

April 16, 2013
The death occurred last week of MrFrancie Walsh Queen Street in WRH. His remains were removed from his sons Declans residence in Coolfin to St Patricks church Portlaw on Tuesday night and following requiem mass on Wednesday morning celebrated by F. N. Hassett assisted by Fr M. 0 Byrne PP were interred in the adjoining cemetery.
A former employee of Irish Leathers, Francie had born his illness with dignity and courage over a number of years. Loved gardening and as you passed up Queen Street during the summer, his garden was a riot of colour and he took great pride in his vegetables. He had an interest in all sports and was a keen observer of the horses

A regular walker with his wife Joan and the dog on a daily basis. Apart from his family his other great love was the G.A.A. He was a very skilful hurler and captained Portlaw to the County Junior title in 1963 but he will be remembered best for his contribution and service to the club when his playing days were over. He served the club in many positions from Chairman, selector, committee member to Under Age Secretary with great success and had many highlights particularly with the coaching and preparation of under Age winning teams, success in Feile, winning under 21 titles. There is many a player in the club today past and present who owe a huge debt of gratitude to Francie for developing and honing their hurling
skills which he continued to do until his illness and having served with him for a period, his enthusiasm and dedication were evident to all. He has left a rich legacy to the club and the community.
Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Joan, Daughter Frances, Sons Michael, Philip, Declan, Brother Eddie, Seamus, Maurice, Thomas and sister Mary and all their other relatives and friends.
