INTERMEDIATE PANEL
Match Report - Waterford v Kildare
Sunday 21st April 2013 saw Waterford's Intermediate Camogie team travel to Mountmellick in Laois to play Kildare in the semi-final of the Irish Daily Star Division 2 league. This team were in good form having won their previous four matches. Throw in was scheduled for 3:15 but playing conditions were not ideal with the pitch holding water in places, making conditions under foot challenging and also a strong breeze that was to have a major influence on the final result.
Waterford started brightly against the strong wind and in the third minute the first opportunity to score was missed by the narrowest of margins when the sliotar rebounded of the Kildare goal upright.
Kildare aided by the strong wind and pitch conditions pressurised the Waterford defence and were awarded a series of frees which were scored, and led by three points to no score by the twelfth minute. Kildare scored a further two points from play before Waterford finally got onto the scoreboard from a free by Trish Jackman. Unfortunately, this proved to be Waterford's only score in the entire first half whilst Kildare continued to pressurise the Waterford defence and added a further three points before the halftime break. The score at halftime was Kildare 8pts to Waterford's single point.
Although behind by a considerable score this team has shown character in the past coming from behind to win matches and the team knew that scoring chances would present themselves in the second half as the wind would now favour Waterford.
The half started well when Shona Curran pointing from a well executed Waterford attack. Shortly after Waterford were awarded a free on the Kildare twenty and Trish Jackman hit it low hoping to catch the Kildare defence out. Unfortunately, the Kildare defence were able to deal with the shot and cleared the sliotar back down the field and scored a point. Shortly after Kildare conceded a free which Trish Jackman scored which was followed shortly after by a point from play by Jennie Simpson. The score now stood at Kildare 9 points to Waterford's 4 points. Trish Jackman scored another free and Kildare responded with two scores of their own. Three points in succession were scored from Waterford frees two of which were scored from the halfway line. In a match that was closely contested by both teams, Kildare always seemed to have a slight advantage at the crucial stages but these small advantages told in the end with Kildare scoring at crucial times during the second half to halt the Waterford gains.
As full time approached Waterford knew that the deficit meant that goal opportunities were required and dropped the sliotar around the Kildare goal on numerous occasions but the Kildare defence dealt with the pressure. When the final whistle was blown the score stood at Kildare 12 points to Waterford's 8 point.
Although this sees the end of the league campaign, a lot of experience was gained by all the squad and in particular the younger players which will no doubt stand to them in the competitive matches ahead during the summer.
Waterford team were as follows: Deirdre Brennan, Emma Hannon, Fiona Morrissey, Vicky Falconer, Marie Russell, Charlotte Raher, Jenny McCarthy, Jennie Simpson (1 pt), Shona Curran (1 pt), Trish Jackman (6 pts), Nicola Morrissey, Zoe O'Donoghue, Lorraine Bray, Valerie O'Brien, Mairead Murphy Subs: Ashling O'Brien, Laura Buckley, Ciara Keogh, Deirdre Nugent , Clair Murphy, Orla O'Neill, Nicola Firtzgerald, Labhaoise Dunbar, Sarah Coughlan, Sara Judge, Clare Whyte and Johanna Houlihan

NEWS UPDATE RE CAMAN TO CROKER
TRIP TO CROKER BY CAPPOQUIN CAMOGIE CLUB
A great group of lassies travelled to Dublin on Saturday 6th of April
last to play on the famous hallowed turf of Croke Park. They were
accompanied by mentors Sham McCarthy, Damien Landers and Linda Foley
ably assisted by committee members Maria Uniacke, Finola Meaney &
Tonette Power. Emily Power, Mary Roynane, Louise Landers, Gillian
Coffey and Kevin Reddy also travelled to support the girls.
Our Camogie girls were Michelle Coffey, Michelle O Donoghue, Michelle
Hallahan, Caoimhe Coffey, Caoimhe Uniacke, Niamh Uniacke, Dearbhla
Ormonde, Jodie Burke, Natalie Nicholson, Ella Ronayne, Ally Landers,
Katie Barry, Aoife O Donnell, Grainne O Donnell, Millie Hickey,
Evelina Bivol, Elizabeth Collender, Lauren Reddy, Rachel Power and
Molly Veale.
The girls and support crew left Cappoquin GAA grounds at 9am heading
straight to Croke Park. The Museum Tour was at 1pm and while we did
try our utmost to have all accommodated, the rules of the trip were
that only our 15 playing members plus three mentors were allowed on
the tour and onto the pitch. The Museum tour was followed by an
information DVD and then it was down to the 'good grass' where the
girls proceeded to play their three matches. All the girls played
really well and really enjoyed their time on the field.
Our group left Croke Park at around 5pm. We headed for home and
stopped off at 'Exit 14' Mayfield for a bite to eat. With the tummies
well filled we then hit for home arriving back at base for 8.30pm.
Many thanks to Tom Flynn, the bus driver who did a great job in
getting all there and back with patience and a smile on his face.
Thanks to the mentors and parents for giving up their time on a
Saturday (all day), in particular a huge thanks to Linda Foley -
secretary extraordinaire on organising this trip, no mean feat
considering the time margin between deciding to go and actually
getting there! The Camogie girls are to be commended on their
behaviour during the trip, they were all extremely well behaved and a
credit to their parents and the club
