O'Hara, Peter

April 12, 2011
With a deep sense of regret and sadness we record the untimely death of one of Dunhill's greatest supporters, Peter O'Hara. Peter died in his beloved home surrounded by his loving family on Monday March 28th.
His remains arrived at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Dunhill on Thursday March 31st flanked by a guard of honour from Dunhill GAA Club Dunhill Squash Club and Waterford Rugby Club. Requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr Paul Murphy. The words of Scripture were read by his daughter Sandra an son in law David Miller. Prayers of the faithful were recited by Peter's son Simon, Lenny Lenihan, Dave Phelan and Johnny Ryan. His grand daughter Amy read a beautiful poem, which she composed- A Tribute to her Grandad. Appropriate hymns and music during the service were by Dunhill Choir led by Margaret Moore and organist Anne Kavanagh. At the Graveside Mick Forristal sang the very apt Parting Glass,
Peter as master craftsman in the building trade. Formerly from Kildare, Peter worked for many years in London and returned to Waterford, ( his wife Mary's county) built a home in Dunhill and settled down with his family and became a pillar of the community. Peter was a staunch and loyal supporter of the GAA and Squash Clubs and any event that took place in the parish the O'Hara's were at the forefront to participate and help in any way they could. Peter never forgot his roots and when Kildare were playing Peter arrived at Harney's with his banner to cheer on the Lilywhites. He used to also get a great kick out of upsetting the Landlord by putting up posters for Punchestown Races.
In latter years when Peter was semi retired he created a wonderful kitchen garden and he got great satisfaction and joy from growing all his own vegetables and fruit and tending his pigs, hens, ducks and geese. But above all Peter's greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather but especially Peter, Mary and the family were and are devoted to their beautiful and very special daughter and sister Katie. The family were so grateful to all her friends from Camphill Community who were there to help and support Katie during this sad and difficult time in her life.
As he built strong and lasting structures during his career Peter also built strong and lasting friendships this was evidenced by the large concourse of mourners who came from near and far to bid farewell to a true and loyal friend. Mary, Sandra, Ruth and Simon and all the family took great comfort from this. Peter is survived by his loving wife Mary, daughters Sandra, Ruth and Katie son Simon, grandchildren, Amy, Carla and Lily, son in law David, brothers Michael and Joe and sister Maureen. We extend our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to all his family and friends and pray that the Dunhill earth he loved to till and sow will rest lightly on him.
