Walsh highlights dual difficulty

Waterford's Shane Walsh and Cork's Niall McCarthy in action during the Munster SHC drawn game at Thurles.
Waterford's Shane Walsh believes the day of the dual player is nearing an end.

Walsh juggled both football and hurling last year before deciding to concentrate solely on hurling this year. And he reckons it is virtually impossible for elite inter-county players to compete in both codes with the level of commitment now required.

"I'd love to play both codes but it is not practical. The commitment that is involved … it is just not practical," said Walsh, who plays his club hurling with Fourmilewater and his club football with Nire.

The highly rated forward's fondest memory as a Deise footballer was winning an under 21 Munster final in 2003, but with the hurlers he's seen brighter days again, winning a Munster SHC medal last month.

"You have to work forward throughout the whole game. You have to come out and cover the half backs. When you don't have the ball, you have to work hard to try and get it. When the ball does come in, you have to do your best to try and win it and get a score," he added.
