Rock graffiti on show as county rivalry intensifies
August 06, 2010
It may be just an otherwise nondescript patch of stone but a rock outside Junction Station in Waterford has become the battleground for fans of the Deise and Kilkenny in recent weeks.
The Waterford News & Star reports that the rock-face has been transformed from blue and white to black and amber on as many as SIX occasions last week as rival fans set about claiming the spot as their own with rollers, brushes and a few buckets of paint.
The paper tells us that diligent Waterford supporters have repeatedly undertaken the two-hour job of restoring blue and white to the slab whenever Kilkenny fans have nailed their colours to this particular stony mast.
One of the graffiti stars, who remained anonymous, said, "There is a debate over the land and whether it's in Kilkenny or Waterford territory, but it's our city looking at it."
With Kilkenny facing Cork in the first All-Ireland semi-final this weekend, and Waterford taking on Tipperary next week, the prospect of another Cats-Deise showpiece remains on the horizon - two years after Kilkenny inflicted a stunning 3-30 to 1-13 defeat on Davy Fitzgerald's hapless troops.
