Fitzgibbon: Timmy in tip-top form

February 16, 2010
A brilliant 13 point tally by Timmy Hammersley helped secure a 0-18 to 1-10 Ulster Bank Fitzgibbon Cup win for Waterford IT over UCC at the Mardyke.

The Tipp native was especially unerring from frees (eight) as his side booked a quarter-final place against DIT next week.

UCC just couldn't match their opponents' firepower, leaving them facing a tough trip to UL in order to stay in the hunt for the silverware on offer.

Ironically the Cork side had got off to a flyer when Stephen Moylan burst through the Waterford defence and fired a rasping shot into the net after barely 30 seconds.

WIT refused to panic though and with Hammersley to the fore, they crept their way into the game before going in at the break, 0-9 to 1-5, in front.

UCC again started well and points from sub. Bill Beckett and Robert White saw them regain the initiative only for WIT to sneak into a 0-12 to 1-7 lead with 41 minutes on the clock.

UCC stuck to their task and impressive sub. Luke O'Farrell reduced the deficit with a neat point but WIT proceeded to dominate the proceedings thereafter with a hat-trick of points from Hammersley helping to ease them over the finishing line.
