Curran, Michael

June 09, 2009
We record with great sadness and regret the passing of Michael Curran at his residence, 19 Western Bay. Well known and held in high esteem by all sections of the community, Michael was eighty years of age and a native of Cappoquin. After completion of his formal education, he entered the postal services and gave close on forty-five years of outstanding service. Dedicated, reliable and professional, Michael carried out his duties as a postman in a diligent manner. For some years he worked in Connemara and Carraroe, Co. Galway and Athboy, Co Meath, eventually taking up a position in Cappoquin, and was assigned to the Melleray run. In the early years of his career, he cycled on his deliveries and eventually his rounds became motorised. Married in September 1963 to Maura, their marriage was blessed with five children, 2 girls and 3 boys. At first they resided in St.Bridget's Terrace and in 1971 they moved to Western Bay. While Michael Curran was a Cappoquin man, he soon became an adopted son of Dungarvan. Interested in rowing for his younger days, Michael loved the GAA, an organisation he served so well and so faithfully. He followed the fortunes of Portlairge with keen interest and even though wheelchair-bound last September, he made the trip to the headquarters to witness the All-Ireland final. He loved Dungarbhan and nothing in the sporting sphere gave him greater joy than the many successes of the famed Dungarvan club over the years. He was a valued member of their adult committee, was chairman of the Juvenile committee for many years and as a club fundraiser Michael Curran, to his eternal credit, had few equals. He was a cornerstone regarding the bingo in Fatima Hall in former years and was the main driving force behind the club lotto which first saw the light of day in 1992. Only in March of this year, with his health failing Michael handed over the baton of lotto stewardship. He will be sorely missed by all in C.L.C.G. Dungarbhan. He was deeply interested in the Credit Unions and he attended many of their conferences throughout the country. He loved his God and church and attended to his duties with fervour and devotion. Predeceased by his parents Patrick and Bridget, his sisters Margaret and Mary and his brothers Jimmy and John. He will be deeply missed and mourned by his loving wife Maura, sons Kieran, Oran and Diarmuid; daughters Anne and Sinead; brother Pa; sisters Helen and Biddy, sister-in-law Shiela; sons-in-law Seamus and Richard; daughters-in-law Sandra, Sharon and Ursula; his twelve grandchildren Richael, Aisling, Darragh, Eimear, Donnchadha, Gearoid, Joseph, Katie, James, Shane, Michaela, Tommy as well as other relatives including nephews, nieces, grand-nieces and many friends. We sympathise with all on their loss. Waterford News & Star, 9th June 2009
