A new voice is needed to guide Waterford football; those are the thoughts of departing manager Tom McGlinchey.

Having stepped down last weekend, McGlinchey sat down with the Waterford News & Star to discuss the reasons for ending his four-year tenure with the Déise senior football team.

In his first year, McGlinchey guided the county to the McGrath Cup title, while this year's All-Ireland SFC qualifier win over Wexford were two of the highlights during his reign.

However, McGlinchey feels that he can't bring the side any further and added that it was time for someone else to step into the breach.

"The lifespan of a manager is around three or four years," said McGlinchey. "Four years was probably enough for a team to be listening to one voice. The temptation was there to stay and it was hard to make that decision to move away from the camp but I did it in the best interests of Waterford GAA and the players. I felt it was the right time to go."
