Kerry on a roll

August 06, 2008
Kerry 1-12 Four Provinces 0-08 The Kingdom over powered Four Provinces with a tremendous second half display when they outscored their opponents 1-08 to 0-03 to put themselves firmly in the playoff hunt in this senior football encounter. After the Four P's went in at the break with a slim one point lead, it was all Kerry in the second half as Stephen Kavanagh chipped in with four points and also played a huge part in the goal that Kieran Bergin converted to open the game up. The response from the Philadelphia squad was intense to the half way mark on the field but the plays constantly broke down in the second half with the back line of Kerry, where Anthony Glacken, Ian Kellegher and Damien Walsh were brilliant in nullifying any deep intrusions. The game certainly lived on the edge with both sides fortunate to keep all their players on the field but this type of game certainly suited Kerry far more than it did their opponents. Time and chances ran out on 4P's as Kerry comfortably kept them scoreless over the final ten minutes of the game. Kerry's defense was brilliant in the second half. Shane Clifford was never seriously troubled. Anthony Glacken, Naill Corbett, Damien Walsh, and Ian Kellegher, outstanding. Declan Griffin had a real battle with Barry Daly that broke even although his leg challenge on Ciaran O'Donnell was extremely dangerous. Colm O'Connor did a brilliant amount of running on the forty with Kevin Walsh who is a nephew of the famous Sean, also to the fore. Dermie Foley and Stephen Kavanagh were outstanding in the inside line and they were constantly in front of their respective markers. Four Provinces will see Michael Grimes as one of the few who held their own. His save on O'Connor in the first half when he pushed a goal bound shot over was top class. Michael Gallagher, Ciaran Haggerty, Ciaran O'Donnell, and Barry Daly were others who did well on a tough afternoon.
