Kerry suffer a defeat to the Connemara Gaels in round 2 of the senior championship in Boston on Sunday afternoon on a scoreline of 4-15 to 0-6 a game that was played at an extremely fast pace in sunny hot conditions. The Gaels opened the scoring with a free in the 1st minute. Kerry answered with 3 rapid points in the 2nd 3rd and 4th minutes. Joey Fitzpatrick had Kerrys first point from a free. A minute later David Clifford had Kerry up by one with a brilliantly taken score.
Ronan Kennedy did likewise to put Kerry 2 up. In the 5th minute Sean Connelly had the game's first goal a bullet of a shot giving Paudi Bailey no chance. Noel Graham added a point a minute later and Damien Comer extended the Gaels lead to 1-3 to 0-3. Joey Fitzpatrick pulled one back for Kerry with a free after 11 minutes.
The Gaels had a chance of a goal in the 13th minute, the ball going just inches wide. Gerard Kelly had Kerrys next score to leave the bare minimum between the sides but that was short lived as Kevin McGrath answered with a goal for the Gaels. Ronan Kennedy made it a 3 point game with a well taken free with 8 minutes remaining in the half but the Gaels added 3 unanswered points to leave the half time score 2-6 to 0-6.
Whatever dreams of a Kerry comeback were shattered 2 minutes into the 2nd half with a bullet into the back of the Kerry net by Kevin McGrath, his second of the game. A fourth goal by Michael Lundy ended the game as a contest. The Gaels kept Kerry scoreless in the 2nd half while they added 9 points for a final score of 4-15 to 0-6 so it is back to the drawing board for Kerry.
In the 2nd senior game of the afternoon the Shannon Blues defeated Galway 3-9 to 1-9, a hat-trick for St Pats Blannerville man Kieran Hurley, all his goals coming in the second half for the Blues.
Darra O'Cinneide and TG4 were on hand to record the proceedings over the weekend as part of his work on the history of the GGA.
