Donegal to Honor McLaughlin and McCormack
May 24, 2010The 2010 recipient of the Damian Meehan Memorial Award is Keelan McLaughlin. Born in Buncrana, Co. Donegal, he arrived in New York in 1998. Keelan, COO of Crana Electric, has been a great supporter of the Donegal Football Club and is proud to have had the opportunity to sponsor the Donegal teams for the past six years. In addition, Keelan has been ready and willing to assist seasonal players for the Donegal Club with employment opportunities. Keelan is affiliated with various associations and charitable organizations and is proud to accept the Damian Meehan Memorial Award.
The Campbell-Houlihan Award this year goes to Paul McCormack. Born in the US, Paul grew up in Donegal, near Ballybofey and played Gaelic Football at school, for the Sean MacCumhaills GAA Club, winning county medals, and for the Donegal Minor Team. When he emigrated to New York Paul played for the Good Shepherd club run by the late Mike Meehan, Damian's father. He represented the NY Minor Team in the All-Ireland quarter final versus Cork and played for the NY Junior Team. Paul played both Junior and Senior football for Donegal NY, was a teammate of Damian, and won Footballer of the Year in 1994. In 1990 Paul joined the NYPD, rising from P.O. (42 Pct.) to SGT (46 Pct.), LT (45 Pct.), and CAPT (33 Pct.). In 2001 he was made Commander of the 41 Pct., known as Fort Apache, and moved to the 13th Precinct in 2003 after promotion to Deputy Inspector. Paul retired this year after 20 years of service and receiving over 40 commendations, medals, and awards. Since 1990 Paul has been a member, and from 1999 to 2009 the President, of the NYPD Gaelic Football Club.
The Club will also honor Senior Player of the Year Tony McMahon, Junior Player of the Year Jack Donnelly, Ladies Player of the Year Alison Kelly, and Young Player of the Year Phil Gasparino. The Club Person of the Year will be announced at the Banquet.
