Bergin calls for loophole to be closed

Galway's Joe Bergin has called on the GAA to close the loophole that could deny a Connacht county a second chance in the football championship.
Earlier this month, the Tribesmen came close to bowing out of the championship when they needed a late rally to avoid a shock defeat to New York in their Connacht SFC opener at Gaelic Park. That's because there's no provision for a second chance in games involving New York as they are normally easily defeated. Also, some of their players would not be in a position to travel to Ireland for the next round as they are undocumented in the US.
"It does need to be looked at in fairness," Bergin said.
"I don't know how they'll work that. I wasn't aware of that situation when we were going out there that if we were beaten we were out. Thankfully, that didn't happen."
The Mountbellew man believes New York will only get stronger over the next few weeks due to the recession here.
"They have a lot of players out there this year that they wouldn't have had in the last couple of years. It looks like things are picking up for them over there. It's nice to go to play there and hopefully the GAA can keep it going."
