A Longford GAA club has been left heartbroken by the tragic death of 21-year-old Danny McGee in New York.

A former player with Fr Manning Gaels and St Vincent's minor club, Danny suffered fatal head injuries after he was assaulted outside a bar in Queen's in the early hours of Thanksgiving Day.

"This is the biggest tragedy to ever hit Drumlish," local Fianna Fail County Councillor Martin Mulleady said.

Fr Manning Gaels GAA said in a statement: "It is with great sadness and shock that we have learned of the tragic passing of Danny McGee in New York.

"Danny was a terrific talent and starred for St. Vincent’s at each age group and played for the Gaels shortly before emigrating to the US. Above all he was a young gentleman, with a great sense of humour, who was loved by all who knew him. To his heartbroken family and wide circle of friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
