Secondary grounds banned from hosting Ulster club ties

November 02, 2010
The Ulster Council has outlawed secondary grounds from hosting provincial club championship games.

From now on, only main county grounds will be allowed to stage such fixtures. And that means last Sunday's clash of Crossmaglen and St. Gall's was the last to be played at St. Oliver Plunkett in Crossmaglen with all future 'home' games involving the Armagh champions moving to the redeveloped Athletic Grounds, which is due to reopen soon..

The decision also comes in the wake of the controversy which surrounded Coalisland's meeting with Roslea. The Tyrone champions were up in arms at the decision to fix the game for Healy Park in Omagh, despite their own Fr Peter Campbell Park being a designated county ground.

Ulster Council secretary Danny Murphy told The Irish Daily Star: "The facilities are there for every aspect of the games. There is a requirement on us to treat senior club championship games as Category B games.

"From here on in, all of our Ulster club senior championship games will be fixed for main county grounds. We looked at the general situation as well as the specific case regarding Coalisland. I think it will work out for the better for everybody concerned."
