Late Finnerty strike sees Galway avoid Sligo shock for Connacht SFC final return

Galway got out of jail against Sligo this afternoon thanks to Rob Finnerty’s goal at the death which gave them a 1-13 to 0-14 victory at Markievicz Park and place in the Connacht SFC final.

The home side had led for the vast majority of this one but Finnerty’s strike – created by the brilliance of Damien Comer – broke their hearts in the end and advanced the Tribesmen towards another final date with either Roscommon or Mayo on May 5th.

Tony McEntee’s side had made the perfect start with points from Nathan Mullen, Niall Murphy, Cian Lally and Canice Mulligan putting them 0-4 to 0-0 in front.

Shane Walsh would grab Galway’s first score after a dozen minute but, with their tails up, the Yeats men kept ahead and Alan McLoughlin’s superb point saw them towards a 0-9 to 0-6 interval lead.

Mikey Gordon would make it a four-point game again for the hosts after the change of ends before Comer (2) and Finnerty shot points that narrowed their team’s deficit to the minimum.

Sligo pushed the deficit out to three again and, despite points from Kieran Molloy and Johnny Heaney, they looked to be over the line for a famous victory until Finnerty’s late, late intervention.
