Tommy Larkins held off a second half Loughrea fightback to seal a 1-16 to 0-15 victory in yesterday's Galway SHC opener at Kenny Park.

Leading by 1-9 to 0-6 at half time, Tommies had to withstand a brave comeback by their Group 1 opponents in Athenry.

Despite playing with 14 men following Oisin Coyle's red card, Loughrea managed to cut the deficit to the minimum.

But they couldn't regain parity as points from goalscorer Conor Gardiner and Jason Flynn ensured that Tommy Larkins stayed in front.
