As the players of Kilkenny and Tipperary continue their preparations for this year’s hurling showpiece, Patrick Horgan is left to wonder what might have been.

Despite a personal return of 3-10 from ‘Hoggie’, the Rebel County’s interest in this year’s championship ended with a quarter-final defeat to the Cats.

"It was very disappointing,” the Glen Rovers clubman commented to RTE Sport after picking up the PwC GAA/GPA Player of the Month award for July earlier today.

“We wanted to progress further than we did last year. That didn't happen and we've taken a backward step obviously.

“The standard we were at this year just wasn't good enough.”

The defeat signalled the end of John Meyler’s time at the helm and Horgan paid tribute to the departing manager.

“John put so much into it for the last two years. We didn't expect it so soon. It takes up a lot of someone's time so that comes into it as well obviously. 

“Sorry to see him go but that was his decision.”
