Munster MHC: Tipp have no answer to Cahalane

May 12, 2019

Tipperary's Conor McKelvey and Ethan Twomey of Cork

Cork 2-27

Tipperary 1-18

A brace of first half goals from Jack Cahalane set up Cork for a comfortable victory over Tipperary in the opening round of the Munster MHC at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

The hosts led by 2-8 to 0-11 at the interval and took control after the restart to start their campaign in style.

Cahalane pounced for his first goal after nine minutes to give the winners a 1-4 to 0-2 lead. Tipp responded with points from captain John Campion and Jack Leamy, but efforts from Paul O'Riordan, Cahalane and Ethan Twomey kept Cork in the driving seat.

A fifth point from Leamy and a third from Colm Fogarty left the minimum between the sides, 0-10 to 1-8, after 26 minutes, but Cahalane then raised his second green flag after good work by Cian McCarthy and sub Colin Walsh to leave six in it at the interval.

Tipp grabbed the first score of the second half through Leamy, but then conceded seven in-a-row as O’Riordan, Darragh Flynn, Colin Walsh and Cian McCarthy all scored for Cork.

Fogarty briefly broke their momentum before the home side tagged on four more unanswered points to open up a 2-19 to 0-13 lead.

Darragh Stakelum pulled a goal back for Tipp in the 48th minute, but Cork closed out the win with late scores from Twomey and Flynn (who finished with 0-8) as well as from subs Issac Walsh and Jake Carr.
