Clare 3-21

Waterford 2-14

Mark Rodgers scored 2-3 as Clare bounced back from last Sunday's first round defeat to Cork with victory over Waterford in the Munster MHC at Cusack Park this afternoon.

The Scariff youngster raised his second green flag in the closing stages to make the win safe for the Banner whose other goal came from a Kealan Guyler penalty.

Despite employing full forward Kevin Mahony as a sweeper, Waterford found themselves playing catch-up after Clare struck two goals in the opening 11 minutes to establish a 2-5 to 0-3 lead. Points from Darragh Healy, Guyler, Jack Minogue and Shane Meehan had propelled the home side into a 0-4 to 0-2 lead before Guyler and Rodgers - who was fouled for the penalty - scored two goals in the space of a minute.

Waterford, to their credit, replied with a goal from Caolan MacCraith after he was set up by Aidan Organ, while the accurate free-taking of Paddy Leevy left them trailing by just three points, 0-9 to 1-9, at the break.

Points from subs Conner Hegarty and Robin Mounsey had Clare seven clear once more before a James Power goal brought Waterford back into it with five minutes remaining.

But Rodgers had the final say with a 60th minute strike as the Banner got their campaign back on track.
