Johnny Glynn returned from New York to line out for Ardrahan in the first round of the Galway SHC yesterday, but was enable to save them from defeat to Padirag Pearses.

Glynn, who undertook the longest commute of any inter-county player last year when he travelled back and forth from the Big Apple to feature in Galway's All-Ireland success, lined out at full forward in the SHC 'B' clash at Kenny Park, but Ardrahan fell to a 0-16 to 0-20 defeat.

The other big talking point was Sarsfields' 1-15 to 2-9 SHC 'A' victory over Portumna. Hurler of the Year Joe Canning bagged two goals before half-time for Portumna, but an Alan Ward goal at the other end proved decisive.

St. Thomas', Loughrea, Gort and holders Liam Mellows also enjoyed SHC 'A' opening round wins.
