Quinlan, Andrew

The Late Andrew Quinlan The death of Andy Quinlan of Glengar, Cappawhite, removed a highly respected and popular community activist, committed Gael, a proud son of the Premier County and successful farmer, who at all times strove in the common and public good to improve the lot of his fellow people. Andy always took an active interest in national and local affairs and was a shrewd reader of the political scene in South Tipperary. He held many senior positions at constituency level in the Fianna Fail party over his life time. His involvement with the GAA and in particular his local club Glengar, was to him a labour of love and one of great personal satisfaction and pride. Andy Quinland was the embodiment of the national and sporting spirit of County Tipperary in many ways during his life. The honour of the little village as expressed by the hurlers of Glengar despite limited resources reflected how Andy and his neighbours loved their native place and our national games. His presence annually with his wife Josephine at commemoration ceremonies at Soloheadbeg, Kilfeakle and other places, for the dead who died for Ireland irrespective of the weather, manifested his national spirit and respect for all who stove to make our land what now is, a vibrant and prosperous State and member of EU. As a friend Andy was a man of honour and great loyalty, a good conversationalist with a remarkable memory, his recall of sporting and political happenings and local events of half a century earlier, were always vivid and accurate. Living close to the Limerick county border Andy had to be an able and patient debater, particularly to hold his own on his regular trips across the border to Doon, when discussing sport in the scholastic village and hurling centre. It is hard to adjust to his permanent absence from our midst as we attend gatherings where we met him over the years with his wife Josephine. At his removal and burial large and representatives crowds from across the spectrum of society attended, to offer their condolences to Josephine and his step family the Hogans of which Andy was so proud. As we recall bygone times and social occasions where Andy and Josephine were present, it leaves me with pleasant memories of a man who did his best for his fellow people, which has earned him a surplus of credits to bring him and others past Saint Peter and to the Kingdom of Heaven. To his widow Jospehine and family our deepest sympathy may he rest in peace among his departed kindred and neighbours. Now you are gone and Glengar is lonely This beautiful evening of a radiant day. The birds are singing a last sweet requiem In the fields of your love where the sunbeams play. Your long, long journey at last is ended The day is done your toil is o'er May God and Mary in the Halls of Heaven Give you peace and shelter for evermore. Courtesy of the Tipperary Star 2/2/08
