The Late Michael Grimes The unexpected death on 29th December of Michael Grimes 32 Lacey Avenue Templemore was a sad occasion for his family an cast a gloom over the town and the surrounding area. Michael had been preparing to attend the funeral of an old neighbour in Lacey Avenue when he died suddenly at his home. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him or met him on his daily walks or cycle about the town or through the town park with his dogs. He fed the ducks at the lake and he was a certainty to be at one of the shop windows for a chat with anyone who had the time of day. He had a laid back approach to life and enjoyed each day as it came. Michael had two great loves in life - his family and the GAA. In his younger days he was a very promising boxer with the local boxing club, winning many trophies. He was the eldest child of the late Dick & Annie Grimes and was born and reared in 32 Lacey Avenue. After marrying Teresa he continued to live in his home where he also reared his own family. He was extremely proud of his children and in turn his grandchildren, and avidly followed their successes or otherwise on and off the sportsfield. He worked in the Dunlop Tyre Factory for 30 years until the factory closed in 1986. Michael was a loyal supporter of GAA and in particular of the J K Bracken's Club. In his homely Fr Walton spoke of the many stories he had heard of Michael 'travelling to matches, of thumbing lifts and squeezing into cars already nearly full and afterwards not only discussing the match but of also dissecting it'. That was Michael - he always had interest of the club at heart. He was involved at all levels of the club - as a committee member, selector, caretaker and promoter of the Development Draw. He would regularly attend underage matches and training sessions in Pairc Shileann spotting potential talent. In fitting tribute to Michael, on the evening of the removal of his remains, a huge contingent of J K Bracken's club members accompanied the hearse from Grey's Funeral Home to the Church of the Sacred Heart. Large crowds again attended at the Funeral Mass and burial in the local cemetery where a lone piper played at the graveside where Michael was laid to rest. Sincere sympathy is extended to Michael's wife Teresa, daughters Caroline and Teresa, sons Michael and Richard, grandchildren Aidan, Jack, Dylan and Jordan, sisters Josie, Nora, Mai and Nancy, sons-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.
