Moriarty, Paddy
October 30, 2007
The death occurred in Northampton, England, of Paddy Moriarty - a true sportsman and gentleman.
Paddy was born in Fennor, Gortnahoe, in 1940, one of thirteen children of Batty and Ellen, and attended nearly Graigue NS. Paddy played hurling from a very young age with his many brothers and neighbours, and soon shone on the field of play.
In 1959 he starred in the half forward line on the Gortnahoe No.1 Junior team which won the Tipperary County Final. He later played junior hurling for Tipperary.
Like many of his siblings and contemporaries, Paddy took the boat to England in 1959 in search of employment. He settled in Nothampton where he joined St Patrick's GAA Club and hurled for some years with his brothers Jimmy, Mick and Neddy.
He spent his life working on the building trade. Since he never married he was a great support to all his brother, sisters, and close friends in all the local community as his nephew Neil confirmed in his oration at the burial.
Northampton Cathedral was packed for Paddy's funeral Mass which was celebrated by Canon John Udris. Many of his former Gornahoe team-mates attended, including Jim Ryan, Covent Garden and Pat Purcell, Luton.
Paddy is survived by his brothers Mick, Neddy, Jimmy, Batty and Thomas, and by his sisters Mary, Kitty, Eileen, Norah, Bridie, his brothers-in law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, and cousins. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
