The late Martin Ryan The death occurred at the home of his daughter in Dublin of Martin Ryan, The Lane, Holycross. Martin had suffered indifferent health over the past year or so and some months ago his illness necessitated hospital treatment in Dublin. Martin the youngest son of the late Martin and Mrs Ryan, Abbey House Hotel. They carried on a very successful grocery and pub business and also owned the local mill where the farmers brought their wheat to have the grain crushed, ground an made in to flour by miller Eoin who was employed by Martin's father. A septuagenarian, Martin attended the local national school and then Thurles CBS where at all times was an apt pupil. He played hurling on the school teams, both in Holycross and Thurles. Being successful in his examination of the Civil Service, he commenced work in Dublin, advancing to the position of a Higher Executive Officer. Martin was an enthusiastic and zealous worker. He continued his hurling with the New Ireland Assurance Club and local lads who later followed Martin to Dublin for work were introduced by him to the New Ireland Club. Resigning from 'the service' he founded Martin's Travel Agency. An agency that was most successful. Martin travelled all over the world. It was most interesting to hear him relate on places and incidences from foreign places. On retiring from business he came back with his wife Peggy to live in their new home here in the village. He was involved in the Heart Foundation following an operation and the restoration of the old Church of Ireland. He was interested in GAA, was an avid reader, enjoyed his game of cards and was great with yarns. He was a caring and devout husband and father and will be sadly missed by his wife Peggy, daughters Mary, Phil, Carmel, Ger, Martina, Ann and Pat, grandchildren, sons in law and only sister Kitty Maher and niece Ann Flynn. His remains were brought to the Abbey and after Requiem Mass, celebrated by his cousin Fr Brennan, assisted by Fr Breen and Fr Tierney, he was laid to rest in Abbey Cemetery.
