O'Meara, Dan

The late Dan O'Meara The death occurred on Sunday January 21st, 2007 of Dan O'Meara, St Brigid's Road, Portumna and Curragha, Lorrha. Dan passed away peacefully in Nenagh Hospital on the eve of his 82nd birthday. Born and raised in Curragha Dan framed there throughout his life although he and his wife Mary moved to live in Portumna when their children were young. A familiar figure on the roads on his tractor, he worked hard and was one of the best neighbours anyone could have. Regardless of what job he was doing, if Dan was called upon to help out elsewhere he would leave his own to come to the rescue always reliable and ever generous with his time. He loved the land and was content in his work his life for the bog where he spent many long hours saving the winter fuel. Dan was well known and highly respected throughout the parish and beyond. Hurling was his hobby throughout his life and in 1948 he captained the Lorrha Senior team that captured the North Final. In later years, he not just followed the fortunes of club and County, but all other Counties too and was usually pretty accurate in his predictions about who would win the All-Ireland. Many a match was analysed with his neighbours in the home of his good friends the Larkin's in Curragha and in particular with Johnny who like Dan was a great servant to the game. Johnny was to predecease his friend by in July 2005 while returning from a match in Cloughjordan. The large turn out for the removal of his remains from St Kieran's nursing home on Monday 22nd, to St Ruadhan's Church Lorrha and again the following day for the burial, was testament to the respect in which he was held. The local GAA club formed a guard of honour and accompanied his remains to the church on Monday evening where his coffin was draped with the Lorrha flag. Fr Joe Kennedy PP was the main concelebrant at the funeral Mass assisted by Fr John Donnelly AP and Fr Lawless (Portumna) and afterwards internment took place in the adjoining cemetery. Pre-deceased by his brother Fr Michael he is survived by his wife Mary, son Padraic (Lorrha), daughters Patricia Shiels (Wicklow), Esther O'Duffy (Monaghan), Miriam O'Doherty (Clare), brothers Eugene (Dublin) Brendan (Canada), grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom we offer our sympathy on their huge loss. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of the Tipperary Star 03 February 2007
