The late John Leahy
The death occurred at the Hospital of the Assumption, Thurles of John Leahy. Deceased an octogenarian. Prior to coming back to Thurles he was a patient in Nenagh Hospital.
John in his younger days - as a handy man worked with different employers - including working on the restoration of the Abbey. His name is inscribed on the plaque carrying the names of all the workmen involved with the restoration which is erected outside, beside the Abbey.
John was interested in the GAA and hurled with Holycross at a junior level. However, his great love was music - he was a noted accordion player and for many years John, together with the late Willie White on violin and Jim McCormack on accordion provided the music for dances and concerts and get together held here, they sure kept the music alive here.
John possessed a beautiful singing voice and was often called on for a rendition - his party song was Newport Town. John's remains were brought from his home to the Abbey and after Mass, celebrated by Very Rev. Tom Breen PP, assisted by Rev Celcus Tierney CC, Fr Tom Fogarty, President, St Patricks College, Thurles and Canon Liam Ryan, Killenaule. John was laid to rest in the Abbey Cemetery.
The large gathering of the removal of his remains to the Abbey and at his funeral Mass and burial was testified to the regard with which the Leahy family is held.
To his wife Biddy, his son Pat, daughter Marion daughter in law Carol, nephews, nieces and relatives we tender our sympathy.
