O'Grady, Dan

November 11, 2006
The late Dan O'Grady On 1st of November, 2006, at the Mercy Hospital, Cork, Dan O'Grady, Tusli and formerly Kilclooney, Moyne was called to his eternal reward following a brief illness. Dan was a member of a family of seven brothers and one sister of the late Willie and Mary O'Grady (nee Hayes). Sadly one brother, Seamus, passed away aged just six years. Belonging to a household where hurling was religion, he shared great promise with the coman at an early age. Along with his brothers he won many medals with Moyne-Templetuohy, at juvenile level in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was corner back on the Moyne-Loughmore combination which won the Tipperary minor hurling final in 1964 and was a member of the Moyne-Templetuohy team which won the County Intermediate hurling title in 1965. In 1967, along with clubmate, Martin Esmonde he won All-Ireland U/21 medals with Tipperary. During that period he played many fine games for Moyne-Templetuohy at senior level starting in the defeat of Sarsfields in the Mid semi-final of 1966 and in the process depriving the reigning county champions a place in the Mid final for the first time in 17 years. In order to pursue further studies in his chosen career of accountancy, Dan emigrated to the UK in 1969 and so was out of contention for a place on the teams of the 'Glory Years' of the early 1970s. However he took great delight in the fact that four of his brothers, Bill, Martin, Tom (RIP) and Michael started in the County final victory of 1971 and the same four plus his cousin, Billy O'Grady started in the Mid final of 1970. He was a former pupil of Rahealty NS and Thurles CBS. Dan returned to Ireland in the mid 70s, joined the accountancy firm of Ernest & Young of which in due course be became a partner and settled in Cork City. He became involved in many organisations such as the Chamber of Commerce, The Rotary Club and The Lions Club of which he served a term as president. In later years his main hobby was golf at which he was very adept. He was a kind, shy, retiring man who will be sadly missed in his adopted city and in his native parish which he served so well on the playing fields of Tipperary. Removal was from Egans Funeral Home, Thurles to St Mary's Church, Moyne, where a guard of honour comprising members of Moyne-Templetoohy GAA greeted the cortege. Chief celebrant of his concelebrated Requiem Mass was his cousin, Fr Martin Hayes CC. Bohernanave, assisted by Fr Pat Murohy, PP., Fr M Meagher AP., Fr Joe Egan PP., Boherlahan, Fr Jimmy Egan PP., Knockavilla and Fr Eugene Everard Adm, Thurles. Following the Mass, Dan's remains were laid to rest in the family burial place at St Patrick's Cemetery, Thurles. Deepest sympathy to his sister, Margaret, brothers, Bill, Martin, John and Michael, Aunt Sr Annuneiata, Presentation Convent. Kilkenny, sister-in-law, Kitty and Maeve, housekeeper, Bridie (Sheehy), nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Ar dheis De go nibh a anam. Courtesy of the Tipperary Star 11 November 2006
