The Late Dan O'Meara
The entire parish was shocked by the sudden death of Dan O'Meara of Carrick-on-Suir and formerly of Kilruane. Dan came from a family steeped in the GAA tradition.
His uncle Jack O'Meara captained Kilruane MacDonaghs to win the 1940 North Senior Final. Dan's brothers Paddy, Jim and Dinny all wore the club jersey with distinction. Dan played all grades of hurling for MacDonaghs from U15 up to senior. In 1964 he was part of the Kilruane team which won the North and County U15 rural tiles and the north urban/rural championship. He also tried his hand at football and was on the first Kilruane MacDonaghs U21 team to win the North Championship in 1970.
When Dan got married he moved to Carrick-on-Suir in 1972 and threw his lot in with another club wearing black and white. The Swans. He played senior hurling for his new club and was a selector when Swans won three South Senior Hurling Championships. Although fully committed to his adopted club in Carrick-on-Suir he never lost touch with his roots and followed closely the fortunes of Kilruane MacDonaghs.
A huge contingent from the parish travelled down to his funeral. His coffin was draped with the Swans and MacDonaghs flags and members of both clubs formed a guard of honour. To his wife and family the club extends its sympathy. Mass was celebrated in Kilruane church.
