O'Carroll, Capt. Jack

June 30, 2005
The Late Capt. Jack O'Carroll The passing of Capt. Jack O'Carroll, whilst expected, his nevertheless left a deep void in the lives of this own immediate family and many friends particularly in Tipperary, Dublin, Fianna Fail and Clann Tiobraid Arann, Dublin. A native of Emly, the captain died in Beaumont Hospital on 15th April 2005. He was aged 85. He had been ill since Christmas. In the graveside oration, Thomas O Baroid, former secretary of the Tipperary Co. GAA Board, paid fulsome tribute to Jack. He mentioned, inter alia of Jack- joining the army during the Emergency: becoming Assistant Secretary of Fianna Fail and a great and loyal friend of the Taoiseach, Jack Lynch; at the cradling of the Tipperary Association in Dublin, leading the association as its president over many years and the driving force that made it "the best organisation of its kind in the capital'; always at the ready, in the dark economic days, to help young Tipps coming to work in Dublin for the first time; travelling North, South, East and West to see Tipperary play the 'ould' game of hurling and of his going to New York with the Tipperary senior hurling team in 1964, and having a huge tir-ghra that surely brought him into the army and that made him politically minded. Clann Tiobraid Arann was a big love of the Captain. He gave it sterling service down the years and many of the 'mature; Tipps attending his funeral recalled nostalgically the associations monthly socials, the receptions for Tipperary hurling teams and the dramatic group. Jack O'Carroll has bequeathed a legacy of very fine memories. Tipperary GAA and Tipperary in Dublin have lost someone special. For a man who was a figure of importance and respect, he was an easy man. He liked to chat and discuss. Very sharp when discussing politics and very knowing when the subject was hurling. His ability to orchestrate and transmit the best of West Tipperary common sense was an absolute delight and was prehaps the secret of his rapport with people. His advice was worth having and you would not go far wrong if you listened to it. Jack was the best of husband and father The attendance at the removal to Marino Parish Church, Dublin the Requiem Mass and at the burial in St Michael's Cemetery, Tipperary was truly representative. Included were An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern TD; Seamus Brennan TD, Minister for Social and Family Affairs; Ivor Callely TD, Minister for State at the Department of Transport; Michael Woods TD; Sean Haughey TD; Senator Martin Mansergh; Senator Liam Fitzgerald; Michael Fenton, president of the Tipperary Association; John Gleeson and Tom Ryan, vice-presidents of the Tipperary Association; Mary A Ryan, former long-serving secretary of the Tipperary Association and a great friend of the family; Mick Frawley, former chairman of Tipperary Co. GAA Board; John Costigan, vice-chairman of the Tipperary Co. GAA Board, and Tipperary's hurling great, John Doyle. We extend our sympathy to the member of Jack's family - his wife Monsie; daughters Bonnie and Mary; son-in-law Jack; grandchildren Serena, John and Andrew; nephews, nieces and a dear sister-in-law. Ar neamh go raibh Captaen Jack at feadh na sioraiochta. Courtesy of the Tipperary Star 18th June 2005
