The Late Pat Murray The esteemed Burgess GAA president, Pat Murray passed away after a short illness. Pat was a very popular man in our community and well noted for his feats in the hurling field. Pat gave a life-time service to the club, a hurling career spanning five decades. He played minor in the 1930s, winning a minor hurling Millar Shield in 1939. He was a founder member of Gortmore GAA club in 1940. Gortmore changed it name to Burgess in 1941 and Pat played in goals on the team that won the North intermediate final that year. He was called up to the senior Tipperary team the following year and won a gold medal in a tournament game against Limerick. Pat was the sub goalie in the 1942 Munster senior final, when a youthful Cork team defeated he Premier County in Cork. Pat Murray and his clubmate Donie Nealon share the record of having each won eight North intermediate championship medals. Pat won his eight over four decades, 1941, '51, '53, '56, '63, '64, '69 and '70. He also won a county junior medal in 1964. He was honoured by the North Tipperary Board last year for winning Millar Shield medals with North Tipperary senior team in 1942, '43, and '44. Pat also played junior hurling for Tipperary. This exceptional goalie was very well respected on and off the field. He was a devoted family man and will be sadly missed by his wife Eileen, daughter Margaret, son John, daughter-in-law Marie and grandchildren Stephen and Shaun.
