Flynn, Paddy

The Late Paddy Flynn The death occurred on March 18th of Paddy Flynn, Ballinlassa, Castleiney, Templemore. Son of the late Paddy and Kate Flynn, Paddy died peacefully in the loving care of the nursed and staff of the Hospital of the Assumption, Thurles. Born in 1928 he attended Castleiney National School until he was fourteen. On leaving school he took up employment locally as a farm hand. A brilliant athlete in his youth Paddy wore the blue and gold of his native county at minor football level for the consecutive years of 1945 and 1946. He also played for his club Castleiney-Loughmore in all grades. Dogged by ill health he was forced to quit the game early in life and never got to realise his full potential. But his interest in the game he loved never waned and he remained an ardent follower of both club and county for the remainder of his life. A great lover of card playing, Paddy liked nothing better than a game at night in Colliers Pub in the company of his life long friends - Pat Joe Purcell and the Lynch brothers, Pat and the late Tom. Blessed with a very keen intellect Paddy's opinion on any subject was much sought after and highly respected. One of nature's gentlemen and a great neighbour he was a universal favourite. A true samaritan, Paddy never refused to help a weary cyclist afflicted by a puncture on the Templetuohy road. His house was one where you didn't have to knock to gain entry, all were welcome. He will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, but especially by his brother Tom, his wife and family in Thurles, nephew Jim Tobin his wife Aggie and family Adda, Noelle and Ger in Templemore. Removal took place from Grey's Funeral Home Templemore, (the coffin draped in his club colours), to the Requiem Mass he was interred in Templeree cemetery. The attendance on both days was indicative of Paddy's immense popularity in the community. Ni bheid a leiteid ann aris Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
